English


English is the Core of what we offer as this is the stepping stone to help young people to thrive and progress onto higher levels of study and work. We offer accredited NCFE / Pearson Functional Skills Qualifications in English from Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement (RARPA), Entry Levels through to Level 2.

Programme of study

Course Outline

We offer accredited NCFE / Pearson Functional Skills Qualifications. English is offered across all our sites so that this links in well to the students personalised timetable alongside the Vocational course. We further embed English into our Vocational subjects to help to reinforce these skills and to contextualise them so that they make sense. We are currently developing a library area on each site to further extend our students reading skills and vocabulary.

Our aim is to support students in developing transferable skills for life, for example:
- Skills for reading Improves communication 
- Ability to participate in varying societies 
- Imagination and creativity Critical thinking
- Research skills
- The ability to articulate meaning
- Advocacy skills
- Debate skills 
- Increasing Employability Outcomes

Levels

We support students to further develop their English skills based on their prior learning and diagnostic assessment results. This ranges from Entry 1 through to Level 2 courses across our student pathways. Each level and student pathway is tailored based on the individual student's needs. We further embed English through the use of Keywords and use Glossaries of terms in each Vocational area. This helps to contextualise learning, supports study skills and makes learning English enjoyable.

We have successfully entered 17 students early for their final examinations this year in April due to exceptional English Mock results.

Key Skill Development

Personal Development

Provides students with key skills needed to thrive both now and in their future. Student benefit from the Personal Development Curriculum to support them in Preparing for Adulthood with focussed sessions exploring three key areas: Myself, Community and Independence.

Interventions

These daily sessions, develops students personal areas of needs. We have found that the outcomes within most EHCp are often vast and can be daunting for students to access them and achieve.  Students benefit from them to be broken down into manageable chunks and set as SMART targets. These targets are worked on regularly through bespoke interventions and reviewed regularly alongside students to encourage reflective thinking and progress.

Enrichment

Supports students in expanding their horizons by providing opportunities to engage in outings to cinemas, beaches, and museums, as well as hosting guest speakers to discuss local community opportunities and connections to local services, thus facilitating exploration of talents and interests.

Route of study

At Craftworks College, we are aware that all our students progress at their own rate and our routes of study have adopted the waves model of intervention into our Student Pathways to inspire success for all through an inclusive and fair learning environment.  Students capable of achieving a full qualification follow the Universal Pathway.  
Student that need their learning broken into smaller steps follow the Targeted Pathway, here they focus upon one unit at a time and achieve Unit Accreditation.  
Students that require our Specialist Pathway which breaks learning done into even small steps to ensure that they are able to achieve at their own specific level.
