If you follow us on Twitter, you may notice that on a Friday we often have a round-up of Tutor Debbie’s Functional Skills Lessons. We thought today we would bring it to the blog.
Brogdale CIC believes everyone can make a contribution to society and at Craftworks College this means that we provide a practical learning experience that enhances skills, provides qualifications, and equips young people for a positive next step into adulthood. This week we were working on dreaming and research future career aspirations.
Our Progressions Officer and one of our Functional Skills Tutors joined forces last week and worked together with students helping them to research future job choices. Both tutors were so impressed with the independence and diligence two students showed, they wanted to share their students’ aspirations.
One student researched becoming a car mechanic. He wrote:
To join in a pre-apprenticeship course, for this I will need to go to either a garage or college. Then I could do a related course such as vehicle technology which I need a level three diploma in maths, English, science and ICT.
The starting salary is £18,000 per year and could go up to £35,000. A mechanic works 38hrs to 45hrs a week, some mechanic jobs require a driver’s license.
The student then summarised why he would make a good car mechanic:
My skills are customer service (service with a smile), I also work well with others and I work well with my hands.
He also wrote:
I am also interested in becoming a teacher assistant. I will need to be flexible, patient, kind, understanding and willing to help make pupils’ learning experience better
Our Deputy head wrote back to this student and said: “What a fantastic piece of research. I am so pleased to see you thinking about your next steps after college. I know it’s not your first choice but I think you would be a great teaching assistant because you understand what it takes to be a success. Well done, keep up the good work.
Another student wrote:
I have found a few jobs I like the look of and they are – Countryside Ranger, Games Keeper, Farm Worker, Grounds Person and Brewery Worker. This student really wants to work outdoors. He shared his diary entry with us:
This week I have been at College and at the farm. I have been very busy at the farm. We have been making and putting up fencing along a footpath, this will make it look nicer. At college I have been busy also, we have been maintaining tools and fixing them. As well as this, we have watered the seedlings in the greenhouse. My favourite task of the week is working at the farm making fencing. This is because when I walk past it I can see what I have done.
Our Functional Skills Tutor told this student: I can imagine seeing your finished fence makes you feel proud…and so it should. You are a hard worker, and that will stand you in good stead for your future employment.
~ Great Job team Craftworks!
